What is a traditional midwife?

There are many opinions on what makes a traditional midwife. To me, a traditional midwife is an experienced birth servant who offers unwavering support and has the skills and training necessary to monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing, labor progress, and newborn and postpartum wellbeing. A traditional midwife is not credentialed or regulated and she is free to support you wholly and with devotion. My calling is to support and serve women as they experience the right of passage and spiritual transformation that is the birth of a new baby. My services include the skills I have learned as a midwifery apprentice in the last 6 years of attending births. You are not required to utilize any of my skills or take any advice. Rather, I encourage you to accept radical responsibility for your pregnancy, birth, baby, and overall wellbeing. I am just a witness to your journey with skills to share if you desire to use them. My hope is that the women I serve will view me as a friend, confidant, devoted guardian of the birth space, peaceful presence, as well as a skilled midwife.

• Prenatal care in my office including the following skilled support:

  • Childbirth education

  • Checking fetal position/belly mapping

  • Checking fetal heart tones

  • Monitoring maternal vitals

  • Guidance for lifestyle and nutritional changes, supplements, and herbal remedies

• Continuous labor support in your home includes the following skilled support:

  • Monitoring fetal heart tones

  • Monitoring maternal vitals

  • Checking cervical dilation and station (if requested)

  • Encouragement from a peaceful presence

• Six postpartum sessions including the following skilled support:

  • Lactation or bottle feeding support

  • Monitoring maternal and newborn vitals

  • Newborn weight tracking

• Around-the-clock phone and text support for the first 6 months home with your new baby

• Keepsake birth certificate with newborn footprints

• Additional support as required
